Civil Engineering

Sarawak is faced with the dual challenges of remote rural areas in need of development, and towns and cities feeling the pressure of urbanisation and industrialisation. The latter gives rise to the need for centralised sewerage, flood mitigation, better roads and flyovers.

The Malaysian federal government has pledged to upgrade and extend Sarawak’s limited road network through the Pan Borneo Highway, a superhighway consisting of four lanes spanning the length of Sarawak, Sabah and the Sultanate of Brunei. HSL is developing a stretch of the highway, which involves the Bintangor junction to Julau junction and Sibu Airport to the Sungai Kua Bridge.

Meanwhile, the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) initiative is further intensifying infrastructure development across central Sarawak, which HSL is actively involved in as it contributes its expertise to ongoing projects throughout the state.

Marine Engineering

HSL is Sarawak’s market leader in marine engineering and a key national player in the industry mainly due to its extensive experience in dredging as well as a comprehensive fleet of equipments.  Over the years, HSL has invested in specialized suction dredgers, including a fully computerized hydraulic cutter suction dredger, the Mark III (pictured below) and remains the only contractor in the state to own such equipment, giving it a competitive edge over its competitors. It also has a fleet of tug boats and steel barges mounted with clam-shell bucket cranes to perform sand extraction. Water-related infrastructure projects which draw on HSL’s marine engineering skills are an area in which HSL excels. These can range from mini-dams and weirs to flood mitigation and sea wall protection. Rural water supply, water intake and processing facilities as well as centralized sewage systems are areas of ongoing growth for the Group.

Building Construction

HSL’s move into building construction represents the completion of the company’s evolution into a fully integrated construction company. A shortage of housing and the pace of industrialisation in Sarawak have led to rapid growth in the construction industry, paving the way for the company to showcase its efforts in constructing modern, iconic buildings that resonate with the spirit of Sarawakian culture. HSL’s first housing estate project in Kuching was completed in 1983. In recent years, the company has forged onwards, completing university campuses and a world-class aquatic centre named after Sarawak’s diving prodigy and Olympic medallist Pandelela Rinong.
